Functional Medicine Nutrition

The Functional Medicine (FM) model was developed by bio-scientists and medical doctors almost 30 years ago and is used by doctors and nutritional therapists worldwide. It is based on the understanding that not only genetics but also diet, environmental toxins and lifestyle choices can have an accumulative effect over the years which may result in the development of disease. Rather than addressing symptoms we look at root causes of symptoms and by identifying the complexities and imbalances in your health concerns, we can give recommendations that are specific to you.

Functional Medicine operates on these basic principles:

  1. While we share the same physiological make up, we are all unique individuals with different ways that we react and respond to our environment.
  2. By understanding that the body has interlinking body systems we can start to observe the root causes of imbalances in our health.
  3. By adjusting our nutrient intake and lifestyle choices, we can start to address these root causes.
  4. Our ancestry, genetics and a lifetime of diet and lifestyle choices can have an accumulative effect resulting in certain health concerns. In the same way our present health choices can affect our future. We would like to help guide you on your life choices.

“Understanding a clients' health and nutritional status is a window into the complexity of the human body and the possibility to understand how small changes at root cause can have a domino like effect that can create positive change in health. I’m fascinated by the fast-developing technology and science that is revealing innovative ways to work on health and wellbeing. However, I firmly believe in using well-researched studies together with connecting with the client to understand their needs to provide the right recommendations.“

Mémé Watanabe has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Nutrition Science from the University of Middlesex, a Nutritional Therapy Practice Diploma from CNELM, a Diploma in Health and Nutrition from Greenwich University and BCNH and is a certified NLP (neurolinguistic programming) practitioner. Her interest in nutrition started in 2002 after taking two rounds of antibiotics, she developed various symptoms including skin conditions that seem to improve when certain foods were eliminated. After years of self-study she left her work with humanitarian causes to pursue a career in nutrition.

Mémé, was born in Canada to Japanese parents but grew up and has lived in the UK for over 40 years. Her 25 years of meditation practice has contributed to her interest in the power of the mind and how it can be used as an integrative approach to nutrition. She is also interested in mindful and non-violent communication some of which she learnt during her previous life work for non-government organisations such as Peace Boat, The Bhutan Nuns Foundation and Elroi Hope Centre for Destitute Children. Her commitment to supporting individuals has extended into her work in nutrition with a particular interest in gut and brain health and Alzheimer’s Disease. Mémé currently also works for The Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition.

“The human body has an innate capacity to heal itself and it is fascinating to witness how small changes in nutrition and lifestyle can improve a person’s wellbeing. I firmly believe that understanding an individual’s lifestyle is fundamental to developing a tailored plan that makes it possible to support the journey towards optimum health.

I have a particular interest in brain health and supporting men and women with stressful lifestyles. Having been an investment banker for 20 years and juggling my job and my family has provided me with a keen understanding of living and working under pressure. It was through that experience that I developed a strong interest in nutrition for optimal health and stress management with a special focus on mental health and anxiety.

Antje is a certified NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) practitioner and also holds an MSc in Management from London Business School.

Nigel Fawthrop

Personalised Nutrition, Dietary Education, Coaching

Nigel Fawthrop is a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, and a qualified and registered NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) practitioner. He has completed his three-year intensive Diploma in Health and Nutrition in 2017 at Greenwich University. Through the process of achieving a personal goal of completing a mountain ultramarathon, it ignited his passion to help others navigate their way to improve their health and empowering informed daily decisions that intimately affect long-term health and enjoyment of life.

“I am passionate about health and understanding the factors that can contribute to either promoting health or disease. I recognise the connection between mind and body believing that what you eat has a significant effect on health and wellbeing. Other factors include sleep, movement/exercise, stress and relationships and how these may influence our genetic predispositions for health. Lifelong habits and behaviours often take more than just willpower to change. I believe that by supporting and empowering people to make informed decisions and by facilitating and supporting behaviour and sometimes belief change, can enable the development of lifechanging habits to help people live their lives more fully, moving towards longer-term improved health and healthy aging. Successful health coaching, helping clients achieve their goals, is based on a strong positive alliance between client and coach”.

Nigel worked in project management for many years and decided upon a career change to follow his passion in nutrition, health and wellness. His aim is to help support, educate and empower people in support of their life and health goals. Nigel, along-side his training, undertakes regular professional enhancement training courses(CPD), including genetics, to support his learning, attending many international conferences from leading practitioners in the field. Being an integrative complementary therapy, health coaching works well alongside other complementary therapies as well as conventional medicine.

Nigel is also a member of the following professional bodies:

  • Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) (FMCA Graduate)
  • Association of neuro-linguistic programming (ANLP)
  • British Association for Applied Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT)
